Rafi Sahaab singing the Amalgam of Love and Hate in: Koee Mujh se Poochhe Ke Tum Mere Kyaa Ho...

Roman Transliteration/English Translation of the Urdu/Hindi Lyrics:

zulf lehraayee teree, aur mereee taqdeer baneee,
YOUR CURLING LOCK WAIVED AND MY FORTUNE WAS MADE,

koee dekhe zaraa, kyaa pyaar kee tasveer baneee,
LET SOMEONE SEE WHAT A PICTURE OF LOVE WAS MADE!

jab kabhee ba.dhne lage, shaam ke Thande saaye,
WHENEVER THE COLD EVEN SHADOWS BEGAN TO LENGTHEN

tere dahakte huwe rukhsaar, wahaa.n kaam aaye,
YOUR BLAZING CHEEKS CAME TO THE RESCUE,

gardish-e- dahar ne, jab jab bhee uchhaalaa mujhko,
AS AND WHEN THE MISFORTUNE TOSSED ME ABOUT,

tereee makhmoor, nigaaho.n ne, sambhaalaa mujhko.....
ME, YOUR VELVETY EYES SUPPORTED...

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho,
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

mere pyaar kee, ek hasee.n, iltijaa ho,
YOU’RE A BEAUTIFUL REFUGE OF MY LOVE,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho,
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

mere pyaar kee, ek hasee.n, iltijaa ho,
YOU’RE A BEAUTIFUL REFUGE OF MY LOVE,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho....
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

mere dilne sajde men, girke jo maangee,
WHAT MY HEART IMPLORED AFTER FALLING DOWN IN PROSTRATION...

mere dilne sajde men, girke jo maangee,
WHAT MY HEART IMPLORED AFTER FALLING DOWN PROSTRATION

mohabbat ki voh, pehlee pehlee duaa ho,
THAT VERY FIRST SUPPLICATION OF LOVE YOU’RE,

koee mujhse poochhe ke tum mere kyaa ho...
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

tarannum ko bhee, rashk aataa hai jispar,
THAT WHICH EVEN THE MELODY IS ENVIOUS OF

mere dil kee waadee men, tum voh sadaa ho,
YOU’RE THAT VOICE IN THE VALLEY OF MY HEART,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho...
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

mereee zindagaanee agar ek chaman hai
IF MY LIFE IS ONE GARDEN OF FLOWERS,

mereee zindagaanee agar ek chaman hai,
IF MY LIFE IS ONE GARDEN OF FLOWERS,

tau phir jaaneman, tum bhee baade-sabaa ho,
THEN SWEETHEART, YOU TOO ARE THE MORNING BREEZE,

koee mujhse poochhe ke tum mere kyaa ho,
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

mere pyaar kee, ek hasee.n, iltijaa ho,
YOUR’RE A BEAUTIFUL REFUGE OF MY LOVE,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho...
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

mereee khamosh see dunyaa men hai kyoo.n aaj hai khalal,
WHY IN MY PLACID WORLD THERE’S A DISTURBANCE TODAY?

maine dekhaa hai kahee.n, tootaa huwaa taaj mahal,
I’VE SEEN SOMEWHERE A SHATTERED TAJ MAHAL,

yeh hawaa roz chalegee mujhe maaloom naa thaah,
SUCH WIND WOULD BLOW EVERY DAY, I HAD NO INKLING,

zulf naagin bhee bane.ngee mujhe maaloom naa thaah,
THE CURL WOULD BECOME A SERPENT, I HAD NO INKLING,

tere rukhsaaro me.n garmee ka kahee.n naam nahee.n,
YOUR CHEEKS HAVE NOT THE SLIGHTEST WARMTH,

teree aankho.n men wafaa ka koeee paighaam nahee.n,
THERE’S NO MESSAGE OF FAITHFULNESS IN YOUR EYES,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho,
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

wafaa jisne lootee, wohee bewafaa ho
THE ONE WHO PLUNDERED FAITH, THE SAME FAITHLESS ONE YOU’RE,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho,
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

wafaa jisne lootee, wohee bewafaa ho,
THE ONE WHO PLUNDERED FAITH, THE SAME FAITHLESS ONE YOU’RE,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho....
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

naa chhe.daa gayaa jispe naghma wafaa kaa,
THAT UPON WHICH NO MELODY OF FIDELITY WAS PLAYED

usee saaz kee tum bhee ek sadaa ho,
OF THE SAME INSTRUMENT YOU,TOO, ARE A CLANG,

jo detaa hai aankho.n ko rangeen dhokaa,
THAT WHICH COLOURFULLY DECEIVES THE EYES,

wohee khoobsoorat sa jhootaa nashaa ho,
THE SAME, SEEMINGLY BEAUTIFUL, SPURIOUS INTOXICANT YOU’RE,

zaraa apne dil se tau yeh poochh dekho,
JUST TRY ASKING YOUR OWN HEART

mere ho yaa tum, ghair ka aasraa ho
WHETHER YOU BELONG TO ME, OR ARE A RETREAT OF A STRANGER,

mere ho yaa tum, ghair ka aasraa ho,
WHETHER YOU BELONG TO ME, OR ARE A RETREAT OF A STRANGER,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho,
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

wafaa jisne lootee, wohee bewafaa ho,
THE ONE WHO PLUNDERED FAITH, THE SAME FAITHLESS ONE YOU’RE,

koee mujhse poochhe, ke tum mere kyaa ho,
LET SOMEONE ASK ME, WHAT YOU’RE TO ME,

tum bewafaa ho,
YOU’RE FAITHLESS...

tum bewafaa ho,
YOU’RE FAITHLESS...

tum bewafaa ho,
YOU’RE FAITHLESS...

tum bewafaa ho.
YOU’RE FAITHLESS.

  2. Thanks for the compliments Sharad. This has made my day too and i appreciate it. I am glad you liked the translation of this song that depicts extreme love and hate so beautifully rendered by the one and only Rafi Sahaab.

  3. Dear Nasir Sir.. being south indian and especially from Tamilnadu..i can understand Hindi/urdu only to some extent but not to its fullest beauty of a poem shaayir or ghazal or Naat etc.. But your translations really helped me a lot.. And Rafi sahab i am a mad fan of him... Thank you sir.
