NASIR

Mumbai (previously Bombay), the Commercial Capital of India, was the most cosmopolitan city of India, - it still is to a lesser extent now. Thanks to petty politics, regionalism, greed and corruption it has become a city of contrast. The increasing skyscrapers on one hand, and the swarming hutments and shanty dwellings on the other, have made Mumbai a city of contrast. Greedy land-sharks now offer a crore (10 Millions) of rupees for a single hut in prime locations in their bid to grab more land for constructing huge malls, mansions and huge building complexes. Thus there’s light at the end of tunnel for the poor hutment dwellers who are now purchasing decent apartments in suburbs with straight down-payment but for purchase of which the middle-class are in deep debts to financial institutions for, say, 20 years or more. Love of materialism has not spared even religious institutions that clandestinely sell off lands belonging to their communities. And yes, muddling jobs, scams, smuggling, land-grabbing, adulteration, bootlegging, rampant prostitution, massage parlours, beer-bars and bar-dancers are just a few unholy jobs that go hand in hand with narrow parochialism and the serious crimes of murder, rape, kidnapping and extortion  in the city.
Footpaths have disappeared.  So skywalks are being built.  Traffic snarls and high price of petroleum products don't  make for comfortable car-driving or travelling intra-city notwithstanding the sea-link.   Mumbai has bcome a city of flyovers.  Mono-rails are in the offing.
The axiom, All is not gold that glitters, truly  applies to the city of  Mumbai which is a soft target for terrororists and their activities.

  2. Yes Veen. That song was popular in late Fifties at the time of the film's release but forgotten with the advent of the Sixties. Also, the movie is just a B-Grade one. The song is picturised on Maruti, a comedian who did not make it, but who was well-known in the Fifties anyway. He's the father of the Guddi Maruti whom you must have surely seen in a number of Hindi movies.

There is of course a celebrated song of Rafi Sahaab on Bombay (Ay dil hai mushkil jeena yahaa.n) from CID (1956). Since that's a duet song and I'm doing the solos, I didn't take that one but chose the one filmed on Maruti.
