Movie: TANGEWALA (1972)
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Music: Naushad

Philosophical/Didactic Song of Rafi: Duniya sharaabee, duniya sharaabee..
Roman Transliteration/English Translation of the original Urdu-Hindi Lyrics:

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

kaun nahee.n peetaa
WHO DOESN’T DRINK!

sab peete hai.n,
EVERYONE DRINKS!

kaun nahee.n jeetaa,
WHO DOESN’T LIVE!

(hnh....sab jeete hai.n)
(grins) EVERYONE LIVES!

maine bhee pee,
EVEN I HAVE HAD A DRINK,

thodee see pee,
A LITTLE DRINK!

maine bhee pee toh, kyaa hai kharaabee
IF I’VE TAKEN A DRINK, WHAT’S WRONG!

Duniya, sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED...

daulat ka, deewaanaa, jag me.n koee,
SOMEONE IN THE WORLD IS CRAZY FOR WEALTH,

ulfat kaa, mastaanaa jag me.n koee,
SOMEONE IN THE WORLD IS DRUNK WITH LOVE,

sab ko nashaa hai
EVERYONE’S INTOXICATED!

kaun bachaa hai,
WHO ELSE REMAINS?

mujhko bhee gham ne, aaj pilaa dee,
THE SORROW HAS EVEN MADE ME DRINK TODAY!

kaun nahee.n peetaa
WHO DOESN’T DRINK!

kaun nahee.n jeetaa,
WHO DOESN’T LIVE!

maine bhee pee toh, kyaa hai kharaabee
IF I’VE TAKEN A DRINK, WHAT’S WRONG!

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee...
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED...

kyaa thaah abhee,
WHAT WAS IT NOW?

kyaa hai abhee,
WHAT IS IT NOW,

mai.n gayaa badal,
I’VE CHANGED,

peeke jidhar, Daalee nazar
AFTER DRINKING, WHEREVER I CAST THE GLANCE,

deep gaye jal,
THE LAMPS GOT LIGHTED,

jaise kisee ne thaam ke baahe.n,
AS IF SOMEONE, HOLDING MY ARMS,

jeene kee mujh ko, raah dikhaa dee,
SHOWED ME THE WAY TO LIVE,

kaun nahee.n peetaa,
WHO DOESN’T DRINK?

kaun nahee.n jeetaa,
WHO DOESN’T LIVE?

maine bhee pee toh, kyaa hai kharaabee,
IF I’VE TAKEN A DRINK, WHAT’S WRONG!

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee...
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED...

aag sahee, zahar sahee,
‘TIS FIRE ALRIGHT; TIS POISON ALRIGHT,

maane nahee.n dil,
THE HEART DOESN’T AGREE,

mujh ko mere, dukh kee dawaa aaj gayee mil,
TODAY, I’VE FOUND THE REMEDY FOR MY SORROW,

zahar se maine zahar ko maaraa,
I KILLED POISON BY MEANS OF A POISON,

aag se dil kee, aag bujhaa dee,
WITH THE FIRE, I DOUSED THE HEART’S FIRE,

kaun nahee.n peetaa
WHO DOESN’T DRINK!

kaun nahee.n jeetaa,
WHO DOESN’T LIVE!

maine bhee pee toh, kyaa hai kharaabee,
IF I’VE TAKEN A DRINK, WHAT’S WRONG!

duniya sharaabee
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee...
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED...

kaun nahee.n peetaa,
WHO DOESN’T DRINK!

kaun nahee.n jeetaa,
WHO DOESN’T LIVE!

maine bhee pee,
EVEN I HAVE HAD A DRINK,

thodee see pee,
A LITTLE DRINK!

maine bhee pee toh, kyaa hai kharaabee,
IF I’VE TAKEN A DRINK, WHAT’S WRONG!

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED,

duniya sharaabee,
THE WORLD’S PIE-EYED...

First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you." — F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940).

  1. There are moments where one does not need a drink to be intoxicated....the beauty of god's creations can cause such exhilaration too...

  2. I agree with you on that. Included among God's creation are women whose beauty, particularly their eyes, can make one drunk. Thus the Urdu poems are replete with such metaphors 'Mai,' 'Maikhaana,' 'Sharaab,' etc. So we have: CHHALKE TERI AANKHON SE SHARAAB AUR ZIYAADA, or AY NARGIS-E-MASTAANA (from Arzoo 1965). Umar Khayyam's Rubaiyat too are full of such expressions! In this regard, even English poems don't lag behind. I'm reminded of Ben Johnson's: DRINK TO ME WITH THINE EYES/AND I'LL PLEDGE WITH MINE/LEAVE ME A KISS BUT IN A CUP/I'LL NOT LOOK FOR WINE.

Interestingly, as you know, intoxication can be caused by other things too! Wealth, Power, and Fame or as one song says: KISEE KO NASHAA HAI JAHAAN MEIN KHUSHI KA, KISEE KO NASHAA HAI GHAME ZINDAGI KA (Leader, 1964: Mujhe duniya waalon sharaabi na samjho). Or as a comedy song in Madhumati (1959) says: KISEE KO SUIT, BOOT, COAT KA NASHAA HAI/KISEE KO HARRE HARRE NOTE KA NASHA HAI/....(From Jungle mein mor naache). Examples abound!

  3. I better not show you my eyes then....wouldnt want you getting intoxicated with my hazel 'billia ankhen'!!! LOL, just joking!

You are so right Nasir saab, one can get a buzz from almost anything...a job well done does it for me.

I so love the Johnson quote...I am going to plagarise that.

  4. O yes, eyes can cast a spell! You mentioned "billia ankhen." There used to be a punjabi actress named Indira Billi. She did look gorgeous but never made progress beyond inconsequential roles in Hindi films.

Of course, Job Satisfaction occupies the highest place in Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

Please go ahead with Jonson's quote. I haven't cross-checked with that poem which I think is entitled To Celia.

  5. Can you believe it? I looked everywhere for Indira's photo and finally found it on Bosun's website! Yes as her names indicates, she sure does have cat's eyes.

And thanks for the reference to the quote.

  6. Welcome Veen!
You can also see Indira Billi in a song of Asli Naqli (1962) - CHHE.DAA MERE DIL NE TARAANAA.... Believe me, Veen, all the songs of this movie are fab, including Lata's TERA MERA PYAAR AMAR.
