35. Translation of Rafi song: Husn Se Chand Bhi Sharmaya hai

From: DOOR KI AAWAZ (1964)
Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni
Music: Ravi.

Mohammed Rafi's song: HUSN SE CHAAND BHI SHARMAYAA HAI......
English Transliteration/Translation of the original lyrics:

Husn Se Chaand Bhi Sharmaayaa Hai
THE MOON TOO IS ABASHED BY THE BEAUTY,

Teri Soorat ne Ghazab Dhaaya Hai.
YOUR FACE HAS WROUGHT WONDERS.

Husn Se Chaand Bhi Sharmaayaa Hai
THE MOON TOO IS ABASHED BY THE BEAUTY,

Teri Soorat ne Ghazab Dhaaya Hai.
YOUR FACE HAS WROUGHT WONDERS.

Haay In Pyaar mei.n, Doobi Hui.n Aankho.n ki Qasam,
OH BY THE EYES SUBMERGED IN THIS LOVE,

Aadmi Kya Hai Farishto.n ke, Behek Jaaye.n Qadam,
WHAT IS MAN, EVEN THE ANGELS WOULD BE MISLED,

Aadmi Kya Hai Farishto.n ke, Behek Jaaye.n Qadam,
WHAT IS MAN, EVEN THE ANGELS WOULD BE MISLED,

Bin Piye Mujh pe Nashaa Chhaayaa Hai,
WITHOUT DRINKS, I’M IN A DRUNKEN STUPOR,

Teri Soorat ne Ghazab Dhaaya Hai.
YOUR FACE HAS WROUGHT WONDERS…
..
Husn Se Chaand Bhi Sharmaayaa Hai
THE MOON TOO IS ABASHED BY THE BEAUTY,

Teri Soorat ne Ghazab Dhaaya Hai.
YOUR FACE HAS WROUGHT WONDERS.

Jab Se Paaya Hai Tujhe Hosh Nahi.n Hai Mujh ko,
EVER SINCE I FOUND YOU NO CONSCIOUSNESS I'VE,

Ya toh yeh Sach Hai ke Mai.n Dekh rahaa Hoo.n Tujh ko,
OR THE TRUTH IS THAT I’M GAZING AT YOU,

Jab Se Paaya Hai Tujhe Hosh Nahi.n Hai Mujh ko,
EVER SINCE I FOUND YOU NO CONSCIOUSNESS I'VE,

Ya toh yeh Sach Hai ke Mai.n Dekh rahaa Hoo.n Tujh ko,
OR THE TRUTH IS THAT I’M GAZING AT YOU,

Ya Koi Khwaab Nazar Aayaa Hai.
OR IT’S A DREAM I’VE SEEN.

Teri Soorat ne Ghazab Dhaaya Hai.
YOUR FACE HAS WROUGHT WONDERS.

Muskraaye Jo Tere Labb Toh Bahaare.n Aayi.n
AS YOUR LIPS SMILED THE BLOSSOMS ARRIVED,

Muskraaye Jo Tere Labb Toh Bahaare.n Aayi.n
AS YOUR LIPS SMILED THE BLOSSOMS ARRIVED,

Khil Gaye Phool Jahaan Pa.dee Teri Jahaa.n Parchhaayi.n,
THE FLOWERS BLOOMED WHEREVER YOUR SHADOW FELL,

Khil Gaye Phool Jahaan Pa.dee Teri Jahaa.n Parchhaayi.n,
THE FLOWERS BLOOMED WHEREVER YOUR SHADOW FELL,

Tooney Gulshan Mera Mehkaaya Hai,
YOU’VE PERFUMED MY ROSE-GARDEN.

Teri Soorat ne Ghazab Dhaaya Hai.
YOUR FACE HAS WROUGHT WONDERS.

Husn Se Chaan Bhi Sharmaayaa Hai
THE MOON TOO IS ABASHED BY THE BEAUTY,

Teri Soorat ne Ghazab Dhaaya Hai.
YOUR FACE HAS WROUGHT WONDERS.

  1. By Oxford Dictionary ABASH cause to feel embrassed, disconcerted or ashamed All these words put Sharmana in negative sense.
So Husn se chaand bhi... In my opinion means: the moon too feels shy of your beauty.
Note : A newly wed bride feels shy and not ashamed.

    1. I prefer "Abashed" since "Sharmaana" to carries all those meanings in negative sense. Here, the Moon has every reason to be disconcerted at the beauty of our heroine.

  2. I will say THE BEAUTY OF YOUR FACE HAS WROUGHT WONDERS.
Why translating we should not go word by word but the translation must carry the IDEA OR THOUGHT BEHIND IT.
    This is my humble opinion.

    1. No, I don't agree. First it becomes very easy to put in our words that are often not found in the lyrics. Generally, I avoid it. I prefer to go word by word so that the original lyrics are not sacrificed. Perhaps when there are idioms involved, or the words are too abstract then I would prefer to supply a concrete word. It so happened that in one of the songs, I used some free translations, Someone responded to it requesting me to stick to the words. His reason was that he has been using my translations for his Tamil translations. So there you are! But of course Sharma ji you are entitled to your opinion.

  4. Ya toh yeh Sach Hai ke Mai.n Dekh rahaa Hoo.n Tujh ko,

I think Stare is a better word than Gaze. What is your opinion Nasir Sahab.

  5. "Stare" is "ghoorna" implying negativity. Since it is a long Look I prefer gaze.
