Romantic Rafi’s evergreen ode to love: Jo Baat Tujh Me.n Hai….

Roman Transliteration/English Translation of the original Urdu Lyrics:

jo baat tujh me.n hai,
THE STUFF YOU’VE IN YOU

teree tasweer me.n nahee.n,
IS MISSING FROM YOUR PICTURE,

tasweer me.n nahee.n,
IS MISSING IN THE PICTURE,

jo baat tujh me.n hai…
THE STUFF YOU’VE IN YOU…

rango.n me.n teraa, aks Dhalaa, tuu naa Dhal sakee,
THE COLOURS CAPTURED YOUR REFLECTION, NOT YOU!

saanson kee aanch, jism kee Khushboo, naa dhal sakee,
WARM BREATHS, BODY’S FRAGRANCE, COULDN’T BE CAST,

tujh me.n…
IN YOU…

tujh me.n jo loch hai meree, tehreer me.n nahee.n,
IN YOU THE FLOURISH THAT'S THERE, IS MISSING FROM MY STROKES,

tahreer me.n nahee.n,
MISSING FROM THE STROKES,

jo baat tujh me.n hai,
THE STUFF YOU’VE IN YOU

teree tasweer me.n nahee.n,
IS MISSING FROM YOUR PICTURE,

tasweer me.n nahee.n...
MISSING IN THE PICTURE…

bejaan husn me.n kahaa.n, raftaar kee adaa,
WHERE’S THE ANIMATED GRACE IN THE LIFELESS BEAUTY!

inkaar kee adaa hai, naa iqraar kee adaa,
THERE’S NEITHER THE ACTION OF REFUSAL NOR OF AFFIRMATION!

koee…
ANY…

koee lachak bhee zulf-e-giraah, geer me.n nahee.n,
NOR IN THE ENTICING KNOTS OF CURL THERE'S ANY SPRINGINESS,

giraah geer me.n nahee.n,
NOR IN THE ENTICING KNOTS…

jo baat tujh me.n hai,
THE STUFF YOU’VE IN YOU

teree tasweer me.n nahee.n,
IS MISSING FROM YOUR PICTURE,

tasweer me.n nahee.n,
MISSING IN THE PICTURE…

dunyaa me.n koee, cheez nahee.n, hai teree taraah,
THERE’S NOTHING IN THE WORLD LIKE UNTO YOU,

phir ek baar, saamne aajaa, kisee taraah,
MATERIALISE BEFORE ME SOME HOW ONCE MORE,

kyaa aur,
WHAT! ANOTHER….

kyaa aur ik jhalak meree, taqdeer me.n nahee.n,
WHAT! AM I NOT FATED TO HAVE ANOTHER GLIMPSE?

taqdeer me.n nahee.n…
AM I NOT FATED….

jo baat tujh me.n hai,
THE STUFF YOU’VE IN YOU

teree tasweer me.n nahee.n,
IS MISSING FROM YOUR PICTURE,

tasweer me.n nahee.n,
MISSING IN THE PICTURE,

jo baat tujh me.n hai.
WHAT YOU’VE IN YOU.

  8. Thanks for your excellent translation. This has been my favourite song for over 50 years from the time I understood very little of Hindi , not to speak of Urdu. Even though I did not understand the words, the beauty , grace and the grandeur of the composition somehow got conveyed to me by Late Rafi Saab’s rendering of the song. Thanks, once again , Nasir saab.

    Dear Nasir Saab,
Thanks for your excellent translation of a timeless beauty penned and composed by SahirSaab & Naushad Saab and rendered so mellifluously by the one and only Rafi Saab. Sir, this has been my favourite song for over 50 years from the time I understood very little of Hindi, not to speak of Urdu at all. But there is some inherent grace and beauty in the rendering by Rafi Saab which got transported to the listeners breaking the barriers of language. Thanks, once again, Sir.

  10. Einstein’s Quote about Mahatma Gandhi fits perfectly well about stature of Sahir Ludhianvi’s Poetry & Philosophy in Literature & Bollywood history-- “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth. (said Einstein of Mahatma Gandhi)” Sahir’s poetry & wisdom would shine on this earth long after we have perished. SAHIR= Wisdom of Aristotle+Brilliance of Einstein. Sahir Ludhianvi was FIRST A PHILOSOPHER who wrote poetry to convey his GOD GIVEN WISDOM & life experiences of his own to common man for his/her welfare in his poetry. Every word was carefully crafted & inserted in the right context to convey true message from that great thinker for A given situation (issue facing common man under similar circumstances). Not even one other published poet in any language on this earth has addressed so many diverse issues facing the mortals in his/her work as Sahir has done in impeccable manner & forceful combination of words.
Long after we (mortals) have perished immortal poetry by SAHIR would shine on this earth with light radiated by NEXT SUN after demise of the present Sun (and that is perhaps few hundred million years from now-- and also if "MEN" do not kill each other in between all those long years & life has to start with single cell organisms once again as full circle on this earth second time around).
