Romantic Rafi’s Rendition in a style: Chehre Pe Giree Zulfen….

Roman Transliteration/English Translation of the original Hindi-Urdu Lyrics:

chehre pe giree zulfeN, keh doh toh haTaa dooN maiN,
THE FALLEN CURLS ON THE FACE, I’LL SHIFT IF YOU SAY!

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf,
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

ik phool tere jooRe meN, keh doh toh lagaa dooN maiN,
A FLOWER IN YOUR TOP-KNOT,  I’LL AFFIX IF YOU SAY!

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf…
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

yeh roop, haseeN dhoop, bahot Khoob hai lekin,
THIS BEAUTY, SUNNY BEAUTY, IS ALL VERY WELL BUT

ulfat ke, binaa pheekaa chehraa teraa rangeeN,
IN ABSENCE OF LOVE, WAN IS YOUR FINE FACE!

yeh roop, haseeN dhoop, bahot Khoob hai lekin,
THIS BEAUTY, SUNNY BEAUTY, IS ALL VERY WELL BUT

ulfat ke binaa pheekaa chehraa teraa rangeeN,
IN ABSENCE OF LOVE, WAN IS YOUR FINE FACE!

ik deep muhabbat kaa, keh doh toh jalaa dooN maiN,
A LAMP OF LOVE,  I’LL LIGHT IF YOU SAY!

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf,
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

chehre pe giree zulfeN, keh doh toh haTaa dooN maiN,
THE FALLEN CURLS ON THE FACE, I’LL SHIFT IF YOU SAY,

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf,
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

ik aag, lagee hai, mere zaKhme jigar meN,
A FIRE BURNS IN MY WOUNDED HEART,

yeh kaisaa, karishmaa hai teree shoKh nazar meN,
WHAT SORT OF MIRACLE IS THIS IN YOUR PLAYFUL EYES!

ik aag, lagee hai, mere zaKhme jigar meN,
A FIRE BURNS IN MY WOUNDED HEART,

yeh kaisaa, karishmaa hai teree shoKh nazar meN,
WHAT SORT OF MIRACLE IS THIS IN YOUR PLAYFUL EYES!

jo baat rukee lab par, keh doh toh bataa dooN maiN,
THE FALTERING WORD ON THE LIPS, I’LL REVEAL IF YOU SAY!

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf,
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

chehre pe giree zulfeN, keh doh toh haTaa dooN maiN,
THE FALLEN CURLS ON THE FACE, I’LL SHIFT IF YOU SAY!

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf,
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

sarkaar, huwaa pyaar, Khataa hamm se huwee hai,
M’LADY,  I FELL IN LOVE! AN ERROR I’VE COMMITTED,

ab dil meN, tumeeh tum ho yeh jaaN bhee teree hai,
‘TIS YOU IN THE HEART NOW, ONLY YOU! YOURS IS THIS LIFE TOO!

sarkaar, huwaa pyaar, Khataa hamse huwee hai,
M’ LADY, I FELL IN LOVE! AN ERROR I HAVE COMMITTED,

ab dil meN, tumeeh tum ho yeh jaaN bhee teree hai,
‘TIS YOU IN THE HEART NOW, ONLY YOU! YOURS IS THIS LIFE TOO!

ab cheer ke is dil ko, keh doh toh dikhaa dooN maiN,
CLEAVING THIS HEART, NOW I’LL PROVE  IF YOU SAY!

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf,
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

chehre pe giree zulfeN, keh doh toh haTaa dooN maiN,
THE FALLEN CURLS ON THE FACE, I’LL SHIFT IF YOU SAY!

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf.
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

ik phool tere jooRe meN, keh doh toh lagaa dooN maiN,
A FLOWER IN YOUR TOP-KNOT,   I’LL AFFIX IF YOU SAY!

GhustaaKhee maaf, GhustaaKhee maaf.
SORRY, I BEG YOUR PARDON!

Ah, lady, when I gave my heart to thee,
It passed into thy lifelong regency.

  1. I heard this on radio over the weekend...and it was after quite a long time that I heard this song. I was just thinking of watching it on youtube today...and here I go! Thanks :-)

  2. It's a simple but melodious song composed in a typical Shankar-Jaikishen style, embellished with a mouth-organ piece. But it is the style of Rafi Sahaab that puts life into the lyrics and composition. Note how he renders the words, GhustaaKhee Maaf.

  3. Very true...and yes, "Ghustaakhee maaf" is the highlight of this song.

  4. Thanks for the good translation. I am improving my Urdu and Hindi vocabulary, and the online dictionaries are not adequate. I have picked up quite a few words visiting here .

Could you sometime do the translation for the song "Hamen Duniyaa Ko Dil Ke Zahm Dikhlaanaa" from Aadhi Raat please?

I realize is not a Rafi solo, but this is one of his best early songs.

    Thanks.

  5. Thanks Reva.
It does happen that sometimes the dictionaries are of little avail. The problem really lies with us. It's for us to choose the right shade of the meaning since a word may have various connotations and denotations. You know, Reva, sometimes even for a small known word one has to hunt dictionaries to find the right meaning in the context.

Regarding your request, I am afraid, duets are are a long way off to translate, since I'm doing only the solos. But thanks for enlightening me about that song.
