651. Philosophical Song of Rafi: Dil ka soona saaz taraana DhoonDhegaa...
Today is 31st July 2010. It was exactly on 31st July 1980 that the Great Singing Legend, Mohammed Rafi Sahaab, left us in a state of shock for his heavenly abode. It was the classic case of "Mahal udaas aur galiyaan sooni, chup chup hain deewaaren..." Yes, from the palatial mansions to the lowly hutments in the the lanes and by-lanes of Mumbai all felt berieved. An angel who had come down to earth from the heaven had gone back to his abode. It was unbelievable. It still is unbelievable that Rafi Sahaab is no more with us.
He left behind for posterity his selfless tales of humanity, humility and philanthropy, as well as thousands of melodies in Urdu-Hindi and the regional languages of India, including Afghani and English songs. This treasure trove of his songs has managed to enthrall the music lovers of his own time, the younger generation and the gen next. The fragrance of Rafi Sahaab's name and fame has crossed international borders decades ago and is still making inroads to the remotest locations. Even after 30 years of the sad demise of the Legendary Playback Singer, Mohammed Rafi, we are still seeking him out, discussing about him, enjoying his songs, and discovering more pearls of his melodies.
Here’s wishing a humble toast to his everlasting memory!
Movie: Ek Naari Do Roop (1973)
Lyricist: Asad Bhopali
Music: Ganesh
Philosophical/Didactic Song of Rafi: Dil Ka Soona Saaz....prophetically tells us how we shall be missing him.
Roman Transliteration/English Translation of the original Urdu-Hindi lyrics:
dil kaa... soona saaz... taraanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MELODY, THE SILENT CHORD OF THE HEART WILL SEEK,
dil kaa soona saaz, taraanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MELODY, THE SILENT CHORD OF THE HEART WILL SEEK,
teer-e-nigaah-e-naaz, nishaanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MARK, THE DARTS OF THE ALLURING EYES WILL SEEK,
mujh ko mere baad zamaanaa, Dhoo.nDhegaa,
AFTER I’M GONE, ‘TIS ME THE WORLD WILL SEEK.
dil kaa soona saaz, taraanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MELODY, THE SILENT CHORD OF THE HEART WILL SEEK,
teer-e-nigaah-e-naaz, nishaanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MARK, THE DARTS OF THE ALLURING EYES WILL SEEK,
arre mujh ko mere baad, zamaanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
HEY, AFTER I’M GONE, ‘TIS ME THE WORLD WILL SEEK.
dil kaa soona saaz , taraanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa....
THE MELODY, THE SILENT CHORD OF THE HEART WILL SEEK...
log mere Khwaabo.n ko churaake, Dhaale.nge afsaano.n me.n,
BY ROBBING MY DREAMS, THE PEOPLE WILL SHAPE THEM INTO FABLES,
mere dil kee aag ba.nTegee, duniyaa ke parwaano.n me.n,
THE PASSION OF MY HEART WILL BE DISTRUBUTED AMONG THE LOVERS OF THE WORLD,
waqt mere geeto.n kaa, Khazaanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE TREASURE OF MY SONGS, THE TIME WILL SEEK.
dil kaa soona saaz, taraanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MELODY, THE SILENT CHORD OF THE HEART WILL SEEK,
teer-e-nigaah-e-naaz, nishaanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa...
THE MARK, THE DARTS OF THE ALLURING EYES WILL SEEK....
saathee mujh ko yaad karenge, bheegee bheegee shaamo.n me.n,
COMPANIONS WILL REMEMBER ME ON THE WET, MISTY EVENINGS,
lekin ek maasoom sa dil bhee, inn saare hangaamo.n me.n,
BUT AMONG ALL THIS DIN, ONE INNOCENT-LIKE HEART
chhup chhup ke rone ka, bahaanaa Dhoo. nDhegaa,
FOR WEEPING SECRETLY, AN EXCUSE HE’LL SEEK
dil ka soona saaz , taraanaa dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MELODY, THE SILENT CHORD OF THE HEART WILL SEEK,
teer-e-nigaah naaz, nishaana Dhoo.nDhegaa.....
THE MARK, THE DARTS OF THE ALLURING EYES WILL SEEK....
HO~~~HO, HO, HO~~~
aas kaa sooraj saath rahegaa, jab saa.nso.n kee raaho.n me.n,
AS LONG AS SUN OF HOPE WILL ACCOMPANY ON THE PATH OF BREATHS,
gham ke a.ndhere, chhaT jaaye.nge, ma.nzil hogee baa.nho.n me.n,
THE DARKNESS OF GLOOM WILL DISPERSE, THE GOAL WILL BE ACHIEVED,
pyaar dha.dakte dil kaa, Thikaanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE DESTINATION OF THE BEATING HEART, THE LOVE WILL SEEK.
dil kaa soona saaz, taraanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MELODY, THE SILENT CHORD OF THE HEART WILL SEEK,
teer-e-nigaah-e-naaz, nishaanaa Dhoo.nDhegaa,
THE MARK, THE DARTS OF THE ALLURING EYES WILL SEEK,

The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.

What we can or cannot do, what we consider possible or impossible, is rarely a function of our true capability. It is more likely a function of our beliefs about who we are.

From the position of the imperial capital of British India to the number one city in independent India, Kolkata (then Calcutta) went on sinking lower, thanks to the hartals, agitational politics, mob spirit, mammoth political rallies, the refugee problems, and the squalor and disease that began in the Nineteen Fifties. Popular culture and cinema were the only silver linings when the pairing of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen was the brightest light on the horizon. It was in the mid-sixties that I visited Calcutta. For me, the saddest aspect was the lot of rickshaw pullers (as shown in Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zameen) and I vowed never to sit in the rickshaw since it made an animal out of men. That vow lasted only for an hour. I was a newcomer who after getting down at the Howrah Station, got a cab and crossed the famous Howrah Bridge and had to get down at Dharamtalla in Calcutta. There I was amazed at seeing the public transport bursting at its seams so much so that I imagined the buses would overturn. My destination was the Free School Street and daunted at the sight and not finding any alternative, I had to willy-nilly beckon a rickshaw-puller, though with a guilty conscience. From Dharamtalla to Free School Street I paid the fare of Rupees Two.
Personally, I’ve good memories of Calcutta. On my first stepping into Chowringee Street, I was transported for a moment or two to Dhobi Talao of Mumbai, with Metro Cinema in a look-alike location. I also liked the Park Circus, the New Market, Rippon Road, and Free School Street. These names, I’m sure, must have been changed by now. At Free School Street I managed a shop of Vespa, Lambretta, and their spare parts. I lodged at Rippon Road where a good apartment could be had for the “Salaami” of just One Thousand Rupees. My Bengali friends taught me Lata’s song: Naa Jaiyo naa, which has the same tune as the PARAKH song: O Sajna Barkha Bahaar Aaayee… For their entertainment, I used to sing Rafi Sahaab’s songs from Junglee, Kashmir ki Kali, Kajal, etc. I also visited India’s first planetarium as well as the museum and the zoo. I enjoyed the tram rides over the green Maidan while going to Kali Ghat. The Victoria Memorial looked lovely from all angles. I especially loved the movie halls there and had the opportunity to watch the newly released MAMTA, MERA SAAYA, LOVE IN TOKYO, and HUMRAAZ as well as the older movies HORROR OF DRACULA and DIL DEKE DEKHO. I loved the New Market where I used to buy the daily groceries. After three months, I returned to Mumbai (Bombay).

Mumbai (previously Bombay), the Commercial Capital of India, was the most cosmopolitan city of India, - it still is to a lesser extent now. Thanks to petty politics, regionalism, greed and corruption it has become a city of contrast. The increasing skyscrapers on one hand, and the swarming hutments and shanty dwellings on the other, have made Mumbai a city of contrast. Greedy land-sharks now offer a crore (10 Millions) of rupees for a single hut in prime locations in their bid to grab more land for constructing huge malls, mansions and huge building complexes. Thus there’s light at the end of tunnel for the poor hutment dwellers who are now purchasing decent apartments in suburbs with straight down-payment but for purchase of which the middle-class are in deep debts to financial institutions for, say, 20 years or more. Love of materialism has not spared even religious institutions that clandestinely sell off lands belonging to their communities. And yes, muddling jobs, scams, smuggling, land-grabbing, adulteration, bootlegging, rampant prostitution, massage parlours, beer-bars and bar-dancers are just a few unholy jobs that go hand in hand with narrow parochialism and the serious crimes of murder, rape, kidnapping and extortion in the city.
Footpaths have disappeared. So skywalks are being built. Traffic snarls and high price of petroleum products don't make for comfortable car-driving or travelling intra-city notwithstanding the sea-link. Mumbai has bcome a city of flyovers. Mono-rails are in the offing.
The axiom, All is not gold that glitters, truly applies to the city of Mumbai which is a soft target for terrororists and their activities.

The pomp and splendour of Lucknow was effaced when Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was deposed by the British in 1854. He burst out: Babul mora naihar chhoTo jaaye (later immortalized by K.L. Saigal). With that came an end of the magnificent era of music, dance, poetry, literature and what not! Today, the refinement of "Pehle Aap" has all but disappeared. The rich Lucknowi culture is on the verge of extinction. The grandiloquence, the generosity and the old 'jaan-nisaar' spirit is now more a matter of nostalgia. As elsewhere, corruption has taken the roots. The havelis that once dotted the city have given way to modern apartments. Lifeless statues of elephant and living political figures, costing the exchequer billions of rupees, occupy many acres of land to symbolise political power and clout. I'm reminded of the disfigured Ozymandias in Shelley's poem which says: "Look on my work ye mighty and despair". Isn't that the lot of even the mighty mortals? The silver lining remains in the form of excellent cuisine, 'chikankaari', the remaining courtesans, ghazals and Thumris.
