Philosophical/Didactic Song of Rafi: Jinhe.n naaz hai hindi par woh kahaa.n hai.n...
Roman Transliteration/English Translation of the original filmi lyrics:

 Hmmm... yeh kooche..hmm...ghar dilkashi ke...
(hmmm.... THESE LANES....hmmm....OF ALLURING HOUSES)

yeh kooche ye nilaam ghar dil-kashee ke,
THESE LANES, THESE ALLURING WHORE-HOUSES,

yeh luT-te huwe karvaa.n zindagee ke,
THESE PLUNDERED CARAVANS OF LIFE,

kahan hai.n, kahan hai.n muhaafiz Khudee ke,
WHERE, O WHERE ARE THE PRESERVERS OF  PRIDE!

jinhe.n naaz hai hind par woh kahaan hai.n,
THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT, WHERE ARE THEY?

kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n,
WHERE O WHERE ARE THEY?

yeh pur-paich galiyaa.n yeh badnaam baazaar,
THESE TORTUOUS LANES, THIS INFAMOUS BAZAAR,

yeh gumnaam raahee, yeh sikko.n kee jhankaar,
THIS UNKNOWN TRAVELLER, THIS JINGLING OF COINS,

yeh ismat ke sauday yeh saudo.n pe takraar,
THESE DEALS OF “HONOUR”, THIS HAGGLING OVER THE PRICE,

jinhe.n naaz hai hind par woh, kahaa.n hai.n,
THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT, WHERE ARE THEY?

kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n,
WHERE O WHERE ARE THEY?

yeh sadiyo.n se be-khauf, sehmee see galiyaa.n,
THESE CROUCHING LANES, FOR CENTURIES UNDAUNTED,

yeh maslee huwee adh-khilee zard kaliyaa.n,
THESE CRUSHED AND PALLID HALFBLOWN BUDS,

yeh biktee huwee khoklee, rang-raliyaa.n,
THESE HOLLOW PASTIMES FOR SALE,

jinhe.n naaz hai hind par woh kahaa.n hai.n,
THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT, WHERE ARE THEY?

kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n,
WHERE O WHERE ARE THEY?

woh ujle daricho.n me.n paayal kee chann chann,
ANKLETS IN THOSE LIGHTED CASEMENTS, TINKLING,

thakee haaree saanso.n pe tablay kee dhann dhann,
OVER THE SPENT AND JADED SOULS, THE TABLA THUMPING,

woh ujle daricho.n me.n paayal kee chann chann,
ANKLETS IN THOSE LIGHTED CASEMENTS, TINKLING,

thakee haaree saanso.n, pe tablay kee dhann dhann,
OVER THE SPENT AND JADED SOULS , THE TABLA THUMPING,

yeh be-rooh kamro.n me.n khaa.nsee kee Thann Thann,
THE COUGH IN THE SOULLESS ROOMS, WHEEZING,

jinhe.n naaz hai hind par wo kahaa.n hai.n,
THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT, WHERE ARE THEY?

kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n kahaa.n hai.n,
WHERE O WHERE ARE THEY?

yeh phoolo.n ke gajre, yeh peeko.n ke chhee.nTay,
THESE BANDS OF FLOWERS, THESE SPATTERED SPITS,

yeh be-baak nazre.n yeh gustaaKh fiqare.n,
THE LEWD LEER, THESE CHOICEST X-RATED COMMENTS,

yeh Dhalke, badan aur yeh beemar chehre,
THESE EMACIATING BODIES AND THE SICKLY FACES,

jinhe.n naaz hai hind par woh, kahaa.n hai.n,
THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT, WHERE ARE THEY?

kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n,
WHERE O WHERE ARE THEY?

Yahaa.n peer bhee aa chuke hai.n, jawaa.n bhee,
THE AGED HAVE FREQUENTED HERE, SO ALSO THE YOUNG!

tano-mand beTe bhee, (h.nn. hnn) abba miyaa.n bhee,
ALSO THE LUSTY SONS (grins) - EVEN THEIR FATHER!

yeh beewee bhee hai.n,
THESE ARE THE WIVES TOO....

yeh beewee bhee hai.n aur bahen bhee, hai.n maa bhee,
THESE ARE THE WIVES TOO, AS WELL AS SISTERS, AND EVEN MOTHERS!

jinhe.n.n naaz hai hind par woh, kahaa.n hai.n,
THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT, WHERE ARE THEY?

kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n,
WHERE O WHERE ARE THEY?

madad chaahtee hai yeh hawwa kee beTee,
THE DAUGHTER OF EVE NEEDS HELP,

yashoda kee hamm-jins radha kee beTee,
THE LIKES OF YASHODHA, THE DAUGHTER OF RADHA,

madad chaahtee hai, yeh hawwa, kee beTee,
THE DAUGHTER OF EVE NEEDS HELP,

yashoda kee hamm-jins radha kee betee,
THE LIKES OF YASHODHA, THE DAUGHTER OF RADHA,

payambar kee ummat, zulekha kee betee,
THE PROPHET’S NATION, THE DAUGHTER OF ZULEKHA,

jinhe.n naaz hai hind par woh, kahaa.n hai.n,
THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT, WHERE ARE THEY?

kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n kahaa.n hai.n,
WHERE O WHERE ARE THEY?

zaraa mulk ke, rah-baro.n ko bulaao,
JUST SEND FOR THE GUIDES OF THE NATION,

yeh kooche yeh galiyaa.n yeh manzar dikhaao
SHOW THEM THESE ALLEYS , THE LANES, AND THE VIEW,

jinhe.n naaz hai hind par, un-ko laao,
BRING ON THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT,

jinhe.n naaz hai hind par woh, kahaa.n hai.n,
THOSE WHO’RE PROUD OF THE ORIENT, WHERE ARE THEY?

kahaa.n hai.n, kahaa.n hai.n kahaa.n hai.n,
WHERE O WHERE ARE THEY?

    2. Nasir Sir, beautifully translated. You know, I really liked the phrase "Pride of Orient". Gives it such wider meaning than our parochial approaches! How can I join the S.L.CLUB SIR

    3. Though the song says "Hind" I chose to translated it as "Orient" since the original poem used the word "Mashrik". Thanks, for the compliment.

    1. Indeed, my friend. It seems that those days have evaporated like the cooling water from a summer-dried fountain. Thanks.

  6. I watched the movie for the first time yesterday. What a film. This song is haunting. Rafi's voice, Guru dutt 'a facial expressions and the lyrics and music by SD Burman saab, I don't know how to describe my joy. Words fail me.
