English Translation of the original lyrics:
tere, mere, sapne,
YOUR DREAMS AND MINE
ab ek rangg hai.n,
ARE NOW OF THE SAME HUE,
Ohhh…
jahaa.n bhee le jaaye.n raahe.n,
WHEREVER THE PATHS MAY LEAD
hamm sangg hai.n,
WE’RE TOGETHER.
Ohh….
tere mere sapne,
YOUR DREAMS AND MINE
ab ek rangg hai.n,
ARE NOW OF THE SAME HUE,
Ohhh…
jahaa.n bhee le jaaye.n raahe.n,
WHEREVER THE PATHS MAY LEAD
hamm sangg hai.n…
WE’RE TOGETHER!
mere tere dil kaa,
MY HEART AND YOURS
tayy thaah ek din milnaa,
WERE FATED TO MEET ONE DAY,
jaise bahaar aane par,
AS WHEN THE SPRING COMES
tayy hai phool kaa khilnaa,
THE FLOWERS ARE DESTINED TO BLOOM .
mere tere dil kaa,
MY HEART AND YOURS
tayy thaah ek din milnaa,
WERE FATED TO MEET ONE DAY,
jaise bahaar aane par,
AS WHEN THE SPRING COMES
tayy hai phool kaa khilnaa,
THE FLOWERS ARE DESTINED TO BLOOM,
o mere jeevan saathee,
O SOUL-MATE OF MINE!
tere, mere, sapne,
YOUR DREAMS AND MINE
ab ek rangg hai.n,
ARE NOW OF THE SAME HUE,
Ohhh…
jahaa.n bhee le jaaye.n raahe.n,
WHEREVER THE PATHS MAY LEAD
hamm sangg hai.n,
WE’RE TOGETHER!
tere dukh ab mere,
YOUR GRIEFS ARE NOW MINE,
mere sukh ab tere,
NOW YOURS ARE THE JOYS OF MINE,
tere yeh doh nainaa,
THESE TWO EYES OF YOURS
chaand aur sooraj mere,
ARE THE MOON AND SUN OF MINE,
tere dukh ab mere,
YOUR GRIEFS ARE NOW MINE,
mere sukh ab tere,
NOW YOURS ARE THE JOYS OF MINE,
tere yeh doh nainaa,
THESE TWO EYES OF YOURS
chaand aur sooraj mere,
ARE THE MOON AND THE SUN OF MINE,
o mere jeevan saathee,
O SOUL-MATE OF MINE!
tere, mere, sapne,
YOUR DREAMS AND MINE
ab ek rangg hai.n,
ARE NOW OF THE SAME HUE,
Ohhh…
jahaa.n bhee le jaaye.n raahe.n,
WHEREVER THE PATHS MAY LEAD
hamm sangg hai.n...
WE’RE TOGETHER!
laakh manaa le duniya,
THE WORLD MAY DISSUADE AN UMPTEENTH TIME,
saath naa yeh chhooTegaa,
WE WON’T DRIFT APART,
aake mere haathon me.n,
ONCE YOUR HANDS COME IN MINE
haath naa yeh chooTegaa,
THESE HANDS WON’T PART!
laakh manaa le duniya,
THE WORLD MAY DISSUADE AN UMPTEENTH TIME
saath naa yeh chhooTegaa,
WE WON’T DRIFT APART,
aake mere haathon me.n,
ONCE YOUR HANDS COME IN MINE
haath naa yeh chooTegaa,
THESE HANDS WON’T PART,
o mere jeevan saathee,
O SOUL-MATE OF MINE!
tere, mere, sapne,
YOUR DREAMS AND MINE
ab ek rangg hai.n,
ARE NOW OF THE SAME HUE,
Ohhh…
jahaa.n bhee le jaaye.n raahe.n,
WHEREVER THE PATHS MAY LEAD
hamm sangg hai.n,
WE’RE TOGETHER!
Ohh….
tere mere sapne,
YOUR DREAMS AND MINE
ab ek rangg hai.n.
ARE NOW OF THE SAME HUE!

Great job buddy. Thanks - I am now able to appreciate Hindi music better. I will probably learn to speak more chaste Hindi than the "Mumbai" Hindi that I kearnt 33 years ago when I first came to Mumbai (Bombay)...
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome my friend.
ReplyDeleteYes, our Bollywood songs are a good source of learning the Hindustani Language (Urdu and Hindi).
Thanks for the translation
ReplyDeleteShantha
I hope you are fine, Shantha.
ReplyDeleteThanks to you, too, for appreciation.
Have a nice day!
Nasir
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThese are some of my dad's favourite songs. Thank you for these meanings. I do not speak hindi so, even though I've grown up listening to the music, I didn't know what it meant. Your translation has helped me appreciate my father's heart, even more. Thank you.
You're welcome!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm so glad that these transliteration and translations are becoming so meaningful. Indeed, this was in my mind when I first began this exercise. The meanings of songs of Rafi should be available to the non-Hindi speaking world for better and world-wide appreciation has been my motto.
I'm glad for you and your father, too, friend.
Have a nice day!
thank you man , ever since i heard this song , i ve been addicted to it.. infact this is my hello tune.. all along i longed to know the meaning.. you made my day today. by the way, i read somewhere that this song was originally composed by jaidev and as he was pushed out of the film , th credit was never given to him..is that true
ReplyDeleteTERE MERE SAPNE in my opinion is the best Romantic Song of 1965 just as YEH MERA PREM PATRA PADHKAR was in 1964 and MERE MEHBOOB TUJHE was the best Romantic Song in 1963. Excellent situation and picturisation adds to the impact too.
ReplyDeleteNow, I don't seem to have read about Jaidev composing the original tune for the song, though the fact is that Jaidev was SDB'S assistant all along since Taxi Driver (1954) days and had in fact come out with brilliant but independent musical compositions in a number of films prior to Guide such as in Hum Dono and Kinare Kinare.
Yes, I did read that the Teen Deviyaan songs: AISE TOH NAA DEKHO and KAHEEN BEKHAYAAL HOKAR were indeed ghost-composed by Jaidev for SDB though I doubt that due credit was given to him.
On the other hand, RDB too was a regular assistant of SDB and his composition in Funtoosh (1956) AY MERI TOPI PALAT KE AA (sung by Kishore Kumar)was not credited to RDB.
Jaidev did find the due credit in LAILA MAJNU (1976)where he carried on after the demise of original music director, Madan Mohan.
You have done a good job with the translation of my all time favorite song!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment Shail!
