Philosophical/Didactic Song of Rafi: Janam diyaa jis maa.n ne....
Roman Transliteration/English Translation of the original Urdu-Hindi Lyrics:

oo.nch neech kaa pahiyaa karta,
THE WHEELS OF HIGHS AND LOWS

nirdosho.n ko chuur...
CRUSHES THE INNOCENTS...

o samaaj ke Thekedaaro.n,
O CONTRACTORS OF THE SOCIETY,

yeh kaisaa dastoor...
WHAT’S THIS PRACTICE!

chitaa kee lakDee,
THE FUNERAL PYRE WOOD,

tann kaa Dhaa.nchaa,
THE BODY’S SKELETON,

dono.n jal kar raakh huwe,
BOTH HAVE BURNT DOWN TO ASHES,

mukt huwe voh, praan ke jin par,
LIBERATED ARE THE SPIRITS OVER WHOM

zulm tumhaare, laakh huwe.....
YOU COMMITTED A LAKH OF TYRANNIES!

janam diyaa, jis maa.n ne,
THE MOTHER WHO GAVE BIRTH,

usne bhee upkaar kiyaa,
SHE TOO HAS DONE A FAVOUR,

uss se ba.Dee, maa.n voh hai,
SUPERIOR TO HER IS THAT MOTHER

jis ne maa.n kaa pyaar diyaa...
WHO’S BESTOWED THE MOTHER’S LOVE!

iss duniya me.n sabko pyaaree,
IN THIS WORLD, DEAR TO EVERYONE IS

apnee hee, santaan hai,
ONE’S OWN CHILD,

begaano.n ko apnaa maane,
ONE WHO ACKNOWLEDGES THE STRANGERS AS ONE’S OWN,

us kaa pyaar mahaan hai,
THE LOVE OF THAT PERSON IS GREAT!

janam diyaa, jis maa.n ne,
THE MOTHER WHO GAVE BIRTH,

usne bhee, upkaar kiyaa,
SHE TOO HAS DONE A FAVOUR,

uss se ba.Dee, maa.n voh hai,
SUPERIOR TO HER IS THAT MOTHER

jis ne maa.n kaa pyaar diyaa...
WHO’S BESTOWED THE MOTHER’S LOVE!

keecha.D me.n ho, yaa kyaaree me.n...
WHETHER IN THE MUCK OR THE FLOWER-BED,

keecha.D me.n ho, yaa kyaaree me.n,
WHETHER IN THE MUCK OR THE FLOWER-BED,

phool toh aaKhir phool hai,
A FLOWER, AFTER ALL, IS A FLOWER,

kisee phool ko neech samajhnaa,
CONSIDERING ANY FLOWER AS INFERIOR,

yeh maalee kee bhool hai,
‘TIS AN ERROR OF THE GARDENER!

janam diyaa, jis maa.n ne,
THE MOTHER WHO GAVE BIRTH,

usne bhee, upkaar kiyaa,
SHE TOO HAS DONE A FAVOUR,

uss se ba.Dee, maa.n voh hai,
SUPERIOR TO HER IS THAT MOTHER

jis ne maa.n kaa pyaar diyaa....
WHO’S BESTOWED THE MOTHER’S LOVE!

jo naa biga.D kar bann saktee ho,
THAT WHICH CANNOT BE MENDED

aisee koee baat nahee.n,
THERE’S NO SUCH THING!

ek bhee dil me.n jab tak mamtaa,
SO LONG AS EVEN A SINGLE HEART NURTURES MOTHERLY LOVE,

baalak koee, anaath nahee.n,
NO CHILD IS AN ORPHAN!

baalak koee anaath nahee.n,
NO CHILD IS AN ORPHAN!

janam diyaa, jis maa.n ne,
THE MOTHER WHO GAVE BIRTH,

usne bhee upkaar kiyaa,
SHE TOO HAS DONE A FAVOUR,

uss se ba.Dee, maa.n voh hai,
SUPERIOR TO HER IS THAT MOTHER

jis ne maa.n kaa pyaar diyaa.
WHO’S BESTOWED THE MOTHER’S LOVE!

NASIR

I admit that "mother" is overly glorified by our society. Reams of paper and reels of films have expressed the love of a mother. But as Oprah Winfrey says: "Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother." To be a mother, one needs to feel the love of a mother.
