NASIR

The real-estate sharks still abound in Mumbai.  The Mills which used to provide livelihood to thousands before were closed down and the sprawling areas of the Mills and their compound were developed to build huge skyrise buildings and other real-estate properties.   The cottages and bungalows too have almost vanished.   No real-estate developers is interested in the general good of the citizens.  There is no more place in and around Mumbai for gardens or parks.  As is usual everywhere, greed for landed property  is rampant.  The flats in the buildings that were constructed for the poor are in fact booked by ministers and even some rich film stars and were in fact exposed in a sting operation by a TV channel.   So many avenues are available for getting rich quickly that resorting to honest labour seems to be the choice of fools.  The Rich and the Poor Divide is becoming wider.  How true to life are the lines of this song:  That the rich covet even a cot and a few broken vessels of the poor!   Greed and acquisition are ingrained in the blood of  some of  those who think they are millionaires  but who are beggars at heart!

How I miss the old city where everyone had their place in the sun, when materialism was not so rampant.  Survival did not mean becoming  rich overnight.  The Rupee had good value and could ensure unadulterated food.
